My eldest is Cookie.  If you want a dog who is smart, playful, independent minded, a good watchdog and will not take food from strangers than your choice would be like my girl Cookie. She is a beautiful 13 year old silver standard poodle.  She is in good health for her age and I hope to have her with me many more years.  For many years the standard poodle was the most popular dog in the US. Check out “Travels with Charley” by John Steinbeck.
